When Parrott looked back at the past several years of her life at the end of the 1930s, she wrote to the man she always thought of around New Year’s Eve—Hugh O’Connor. Everything she had done “for at least three years” after their breakup was “a reaction from” him. Using parentheses to broach an uncomfortable subject, she added, “(yes, including my marriage—I was willing to sell out for anything that faintly resembled stability).”8 The marriage that Parrott was referring to on this occasion, which was the second that she blamed on O’Connor, was to the man who became her third husband, John Wildberg, whom she hoped might save her from a rash of passion-inspired mistakes (see figure 27).
